A long time ago, a really long time ago, no (laugh) not that long ago. We don’t know when exactly, we saw the worlds first scientists. These weren't you know typical scientists. They began by letting their mind get very still, and in this quiet space they were able to discover amazing things and discover many secrets about the human body, mind and consciousness. They discovered then that the way we breathe affects the way you feel. And what you eat affects what you think. They noticed that to function well, the mind and memory need rest.  And that, meditation is the deepest rest of all, giving you incredible amounts of energy. They also discovered that experiences can cloud our vision by getting stuck in our minds, meditation can clear them, so hear, see and feel more clearly.

These scientists or seers would compare notes and then share their knowledge with the community. As you know in that time people didn't have Facebook, Twitter and phone, so information spread incredibly slow - from one person to another and from group to group. Over time what the seers have learnt got lost and was misunderstood, until those who have been in the deepest of meditations were able to rediscover the secrets and restore it. Meditation is universal.  Just like you don’t have to be Italian to eat pasta.

Fast forward to the modern day...

People that were searching for deeper meanings of life, travel the globe and learned that some of the greatest seers lived in India. Listened, asked questions and found something important and in doing so they began to share it.

What if everyone could have a more peaceful and clear mind? Can we study less and get better grades? What about run faster, be smarter, better, stronger, wiser? We are all connected. We can create a better world and it starts with something as simple as closing your eyes, meditating and feeling a deeper connection with yourself. When you feel good you treat others around you better and the cycle continues. Who would have thought that the work of  ancient scientists would have the power to transform our world today!

To really open your eyes sometimes you have to close them.

How to improve calcium intake and absorption the Ayurvedic way

June 23, 2010 05:54 by anisha

Getting enough calcium in your diet is only half the battle--the other half is absorbing it. Mahirishi Ayurveda shares with us tips for improving Calcium intake and absorption:

  1. Eat foods that are easy for the body to digest.
  2. Eat the biggest meal at mid-day, when the digestive fire is strongest.
  3. Avoid caffeine and refined carbohydrates such as sugar.
  4. Avoid cold or iced drinks, which decrease the digestive fire.
  5. Do a daily warm oil massage (abhyanga). It helps enhance digestion and flush away impurities, and is traditionally known to stimulate bone growth.
  6. Go to bed by 10 p.m. so your body is at rest during its natural purification cycle from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
  7. Eat plenty of foods that are high in calcium, such as sesame seeds, green leafy vegetables, walnuts, coconut and coconut milk. Warm whole milk is also an excellent calcium-booster, but choose unhomogenized milk for greater absorption. To enhance digestion, drink your milk separate from meals.
  8. Avoid vegetables from the nightshade family, including eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, and yellow, red and green sweet peppers.

Rose essential oil contains over 3000 different bio-chemicals, making it by far the most complex of aromatic oils.

Gulab itra, or rose essential oil extracted the traditional way in India is used by the fragrance industry,  internationally.

In Vrindavan, rose and henna itra are used in worship in the winter month. In summer it is Khus, Chandan, Mitti, Bela and Mogra itras.

These essential oils, itras are dabbed on to cotton and wrapped around a thin stick and arranged in silver stands around the deity in Shah ji’s temple in Vrindavan.

Chinese oranges or Kumquats in North India

February 4, 2010 01:05 by anisha
Chinese orange, kumquat in India

This ornamental garden tree/shrub is a common sight in India. Winter is the time the fruit show up and ripen. Around Christmas, a Kumquat or Chinese orange tree, as it is better known is the gardener’s pride.

For those who don’t have open gardens any more, this shrub does just as well as a bonsai.

The fruit makes great marmalade, and tastes great even when squeezed into a glass of water with sugar, rock salt and a pinch of roasted cumin powder :-) Ayurvedically it is a good digestive and cleanser for digestive system, much like neembu-pani (lemon juice replaces kumquat in the above recipe).

The fruit though hardly seen in a fruit market is appreciated by garden owners and their friends, who get them as gifts at times.

It is a no fuss tree. It grows with minimal care. Just water and a few handfuls of organic manure is all it asks.

How to Eliminate negative thoughts

February 3, 2010 02:46 by nitin
Eliminate negative thoughts

When an evil thought harasses the mind, the best method of conquering it is by ignoring it. How can we ignore an evil thought? By forgetting it. How can we forget? By not indulging in it again, and also by not brooding over it. How can we prevent the mind from indulging in it again or brooding over it? By thinking of something very interesting, something sublime and inspiring.

Ignoring, Forgetting, Thinking, of something inspiring, - these three constitute the great Sadhana for establishing mastery over evil thoughts.

You can control the mind, through Pranayama

January 29, 2010 04:33 by nitin

Pranayama

Siva said: ‘Man is maintained as an individual through the force of Vasanas which keep the Prana in motion. Vasanas agitate Prana! And Prana maintains the body with its senses. These Vasanas are stored up in the mind from time immemorial. The grossest form of Prana is the breath. Subtler is the elemental Prana. Still more subtle is the Cosmic Prana which is termed Hiranyagarbha. It is from this Cosmic Prana that everything has emanated. ‘Now you have understood the intimate connection between Prana and the mind (Vasanas). One depends for its function on the other.

Therefore, if you learn to control Prana, you can control the mind, through Pranayama.

When you still the Prana and when it ceases to oscillate, Samadhi supervenes. All Vasanas are fried in toto: you achieve Moksha. ‘The Upanishads speak highly about Prana whose subtlest form is Hiranyagarbha. By worshipping Prana as Brahman, they say, you can live a full life of a hundred years. You can do a lot of selfless service and practise much Sadhana if you have thus a long life. The Isavasya Upanishad also exhorts us to live the full span of a hundred years, doing the enjoyed works. OM.’
