Magahar, then and now

magahar

Just 24 km from Gorakhpur, Maghar is a quiet town, connected by the state highway from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Gorakhpur takes pride in being the seat of the Guru Parampara of Hath Yoga tradition. The current chief minister of Uttar Pradesh state, Yogi Adityanath ji is its custodian and Guru.

River Rapti crosses Gorakhpur and Maghar is on the banks of Rapti’s tributary Aami river.

River Aami and Gorakh Talaiya at Maghar

River Aami was a clean river before the industrial waste found its way in. Aami has a revered history. Lord Buddha crossed this river to begin his search for the Truth. Guru Nanak Dev ji came here and met Kabir Das ji. Kabir Das ji’s blessing changed the course of the river to help fight a famine. Kabir Das ji spent the last three years of his life here. In fact he came here during a famine. His meditation brought rain and an underground spring brought forth water to create Gorakh talaiya, a pond that still exists after 500 years of his demise.

Many thanks to Gargi and Mayur Agarwal ji for the day trip to Magahar and organising an interaction for farmers on Natural farming:) Annadata Sukhi Bhavah! In the month of May, the highway roadside was lined with desi and hybrid watermelons. The round, dark green water melons are the local heirloom variety, while the light and dark green striped oval hybrid watermelons were introduced by the government some years ago.
