Meaning of Sanskrit prayer to Lord Dhanvanthari

I surrender to Lord Dhanvanthari, requesting your grace. Please give me your blessing and medicine to heal the ailing. Your grace is valued by all, the Devas and Asuras for freedom from dis-ease.

Who is Dhanvantari Dev?

Lord Dhanvantari is the founder of Ayurveda, the science of healthy living. Dhanvanthari Dev specialised in surgery. Attreya Rishi specialised in Internal medicine and Kashyapa Rishi specialised in gynaecology and paediatrics. The Vedas sustained in the oral tradition for millenia before they were put in writing. Even now it is amazing to see Veda Acharyas perform hours of Vedic ceremonies for health and happiness at The Art of Living International Ashram in Bangalore. They chant Vedic hymns in Sanskrit, entirely by memory.

Ayurveda is documented in Atharveda (earlier than 5000BCE) and subsequent texts.

The Big-three of Ayurvedic literature after the Vedas are:

  • Charak Samhita by Charak of Attrya Rishi’s school (1st Century BCE)
  • Sushrut Samhita by Sushrut of Dhanvanthari Dev’s school (6th Century BCE)
  • Ashtang Hridaya by Vagabhatta of Kashyapa Rishi’s school (6th Century AD)

The Small-three of Ayurvedic literature are:

  • Sarangdhara Samhita
  • Madhav Nidana
  • Bhava Prakasha

When is Dhanvantari Jayanti? Dhanteras Trayodashi, 21 October 2014

Dhanvantari Jayanti is celebrated on Dhanteras Trayodashi, two days before Diwali to honour the Lord of wellness: Dhanvantari Dev. Looking forward to it on 21st October 2014, this year :)

This is a day when all Ayurveda practitioners celebrate their Founders’ Day and honour the lineage of masters of Ayurveda, shared with so much love for all humanity: to learn and take forward for a healthy life for self and others.
